Crisis Averted with Forward Planning
When a car crashed into a stobie pole outside of Can:Do Group’s Welland office in March 2019, power was cut to the site first thing in the morning, potentially thwarting access to critical client information and vital systems for staff across multiple locations.
The server holding the information was at the Welland headquarters.
Prior to this incident Hood Sweeney Technology had worked with Can:Do to create a thorough Disaster Recovery Plan as part of a broader business continuity plan.
As part of the process, our team, in tandem with Can:Do, identified the organisation’s critical servers that contained data which had to be accessible promptly, even after a disaster.
We designed a solution involving two identical host servers, each located at different sites and connected via a secure virtual private network. Aside from usual, regular backup processes, the critical servers were replicated to the opposite site each night.
When the car accident cut power to the Welland site, Can:Do’s Jena Mayne rang Hood Sweeney Technology to say the Disaster Recovery plan was needed.
Within a half-hour, we had powered up the critical server from its replica at a remote site, made appropriate changes to the network, and confirmed that staff at remote sites could access necessary systems and information.
The remote sites were able to operate normally. Forward planning and preventative design solutions meant a crisis was averted.
