History

Hood Sweeney’s history is similar to other successful South Australian entrepreneurial businesses.

We started out as an accounting firm in 1976 as PJ Hood & Co with one client growing to 200 clients in just over a decade. Within the same period, Graham Sweeney joined bringing with him a number of new clients and a name change for the firm.

Over the next two decades, Hood Sweeney continuously evolved with the appointment of new partners and the growth of new services such as financial planning (2001), technology (2004) and finance (2005).

In 2012, ASX listed entity CountPlus (CUP) acquired a 25% shareholding in Hood Sweeney, providing the perfect platform for future growth. Countplus is an ASX listed company that has a national aggregation network of 20 professional services practices, primarily providing accounting and wealth advisory services operating out of over 35 offices in 18 towns and cities across Australia with over 600 employees.

Hood Sweeney continues to operate independently under its own Australia Financial Services Licence and Australian Credit Licence, and Countplus does not have any representation on the Hood Sweeney Board.

In 2013, Hood Sweeney merged with accounting firm Shearer + Elliss.  The merger brings together two firms that share a similar culture and “client-first” mentality.  Our clients will benefit from an expanded service offering and resources while maintaining our direct client relationships.

Today Hood Sweeney is 110 people strong, a board of seven with an independent chairman and offices in South Terrace, Adelaide (head office), Whyalla and Kadina (satellite).
